Aviation Propulsion Technology Hybrid Electric Propulsion and Hydrogen Fuel Opportunities and Challenges

Abstract

This presentation aims to address current opportunities and challenges in Aircraft Engine Technology arising from possible changes in power train architecture. It also addresses the conflicting arguments related to the possibility of changing the currently used fuel to either Sustainable Aviation Fuel and or Hydrogen.
A timeline for the technology development and the time required to reach maturity, is also considered.
It starts with the realization that as technologists we need to raise up to the challenges and materialize the opportunities arising by the changing world ethics.
The presentation is based on the current research activities lead by the Aristotle University and intents to illuminate a few of the issues related to increased electrification in the air transport sector as well as  potential changes in the main operational fuel for the aicraft engines of the future.
